Penumbrae, a Detroit-area sextet that plays melodic, eclectic rock, released their debut full-length CD, "One Way Drive," on Third Monk Records in May 2005. Tracks from the record have received airplay in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Ohio (see below). "One Way Drive" was named Best Record of 2005 by Johnny B. at WHFR89.3FM.
In addition to regularly performing around Detroit, Penumbrae has appeared at many notable festivals, incuding MidPoint Music Festival (Cincinnati), Motor City Winter Blast (Super Bowl Pre-Party), the Ann Arbor Art Fair (Ann Arbor) and Arts, Beats and Eats (Pontiac). Here we are always looking all over the Midwest for great bands, and we've got one right here in our proverbial 'back yard'. With large crossover potential, "One Way Drive" will appeal not only to AAA rock music fans, but also to Americana and pop listeners. If real, original music and an atmosphere with current and potential friends is what you enjoy, then we should see you and Czar's to listen to the jams of Penumbrae.
"These deep and broad roots have sprouted a stout, nonvariegated sound that grows low to the Earth resistant to the erosion of home grown values, blending influences together that makes you think you think it's been around the whole time. Each song blends into the next in a cyclical meditation. The guitar is strong and raw, yet impressively precise and intricate. The singing angst-free and smooth. Brant's music gets a weary John Henry to set down his hammer and a burdened Jesus to lay down his cross. He leaves them smoking a bowl and a-swinging with 'Amazing Grace' on a pre-Zeppelin 'Gallows Pole.'"
"...greetings, we're maybe august. that would be the adjective not the noun. we're 5 guys that have played music together for a few years...wanted to for several... we all have lives, families, joy, sorrow, love, anger and hope for tomorrow...we write songs about our own little worlds...and getting out of them...and how it feels to be in them...we like to laugh...a lot...we do it often while we're playing...we cannot help but do it when krank is in the room...we look forward, with great enthusiasm, to making music together...when we play we remember why we woke up that morning and forget what keeps us lying awake at night...we want to be a voice for people who love music...thank you for listening... cheers "- m.a.

CANCELED due to horribe winter weather. the Outer Vibe jack-knifed on the way to St. joseph.
The Ragbirds use many traditional folk instruments including violin,
acoustic guitar, mandolin, banjo, accordion, acoustic guitar, piano and harmonica. But this folky root is firmly embedded in the soil of rhythm, ancient and new, incorporating African poly-rhythms and Afro-Cuban tumbaos, over sometimes rock, hip-hop or reggae style drum-kit.
The bass is unique in its melody, but played with rhythmic drive to make the body dance. Melodic lines are often built of ethnic scales and techniques, sometimes Celtic in style, sometimes Gypsy, or Latin, or African, and there is an improvisational element to the songs that keeps them fresh. In live performances, the band incorporates traditional African drum pieces, each member trading their instrument for a nearby hand drum. They have a strong belief in the beauty of poetry and positive music, and the power of danceable rhythm.
The Outer Vibe possesses a distinctive sound, both despite and because of their unusual instrumentation. Most accurately described as eclectic rock, the team of seven classically trained musicians seamlessly blends a traditional rock sound with a variety of stylistic musical twists for a thoroughly accessible, even catchy result. Consisting almost entirely of college-age music majors, they have carefully constructed their work so that every note counts. Every chord progression, drum beat, trumpet lick, and vocal melody has been carefully crafted to further complement one another. Influences range from flamenco and Latin jazz to German oompah bands; Led Zeppelin to Lebanese folk music, yet the music remains entirely accessible to any audience and still bears a signature entirely unique to themselves.
Ready for some killer blues with a little attitude?? Cold, snowy, February night...Thursday, nonetheless! Come on down to Czar's tonight to chill out with cocktail (lowest prices is town!) and enjoy some well-polished BLUES!!

The trials, tribulations, and grassroot determination of our team has exposed us as one of the most upcoming and notorious roots bands on the scene. Few other bands dig as deep in to the God-given mojo and animusical magnetism afforded to Michigans favorite acoustic ghetto rebel sons. From the foundations of traditional music has arisen a jungle of sound.
Rootstand is a six- piece acoustic roots band, featuring acoustic guitar, harmonica, mandolin, banjo, bass, and drums, as well as providing provocative vocals and harmonies. Rootstand successfully marries the sounds of traditional forms of Roots musics, like Irish reels, and old world polkas, Caribbean ska to American blues and bluegrass to the cutting edge sounds of experimental blues and groove, urban hip-hop, dancehall reggae, and electronica. Our music is very diverse, yet completely logical: Ska and Polka, bluegrass and reggae, hip-hop and country blues, dancehall and Irish reels. What we do is not a token conglomeration of popular forms, it is altogether something new, a new sound, built upon the foundations of traditional music but never intending to replicate it.
Gunderson is a Modern/Alternative rock band based out of St. Louis, Missouri. Since 2002 we have been perfecting our skills and lyrics to become one of the best bands in our genre. During these past years we have worked long and hard to develop a respectable fan base in the St. Louis and surrounding areas and have expanded that base doing shows in Kansas City, Missouri and all areas in between. Our outstanding guitar riffs, superb acoustic rhythms, clean baselines, and monster drum beats accompanied by the melodic and mesmerizing vocals of our lead singer Chad Braun make for a very diverse and unique sound which attracts a wide range of fans.
Gunderson really needs no introduction to Czar's. You've mande them popular and back by popular demand. They'll be back tonight to show their appreciation for your support!!
Opening for Gunderson tonight is a new band to Czar's from South Bend, called D'Oscar.
Meeting at an open jam at the Chevron in the fall of 2005, Brad and Chris hit it off instantly. Joined the next week by Brian ad-libbing hand drums and vocals, the three determined in short order there was a definite synergy that needed to be incorporated into a project. Auditioning various drummers in the area to no avail, Brad called finally upon an old friend of his from the Miles Davis-covers days, Chad - and d'Oscar was born.
Since October of 2005, d'Oscar has converged upon 14 original songs and a whopping 1 cover (the original theme of Fraggle Rock), while still maintaining a plethora of original material in their jacket pockets yet to be incorporated. The band is just now making its first steps out into what could loosely be called the area scene and is happy to welcome fans of all sorts.
From the village of Makanda in extreme southern Illinois, in a little hollow called Vulture Valley, comes a "caustic acoustic cacophony" known as the Woodbox Gang. They have skillfully combined the American roots music styles of bluegrass, delta blues, folk, and traditional country with the aggressive delivery of punk rock to create their own style of music to which they have given the name "Trashcan Americana". The band is very interested in experimenting with the combined sounds of various conventional and non-conventional instrumentation to create sonic landscapes specifically tailored to the mood and theme of each composition.
Winners of 13 Detroit Music Awards, Detroit Women are seven-woman; energy-infused rockin’ blues group – embody the gritty determination, the kinetic force that drives the Motor City. These women – white, black, young to “it’s not polite to ask,” wild, willful, sweet, curvaceous and petite – are led by four-time Grammy-nominee Kate Hart, who created the group in 2003 after returning to Detroit from the West Coast. Hart tapped the crème de la crème of the area’s female vocalists from a wide-range of genres – blues, R&B, folk, funk, country, rock, swing, hip-hop and even a tinge of gospel – to create a sound as diverse as the region the Women represent.
These women are the some of the best singers anywhere, most front or have fronted their own groups, but when they sing as Detroit Women, they become part of a collaboration where the only thing that matters is the music.

Raised in the beautiful coastal city of Perth, Western Australia, Harper is known for his soulful vocals, unique harmonica performances and his innovative song writing style. He also includes the intensely spiritual didgeridoo (“Yidaki”, an Australian indigenous instrument) . Harper has received multiple Australian Blues awards for "Male Vocalist of the Year", and "Song of the Year" and "Acoustic Artist of the Year". His 2003 release "Way Down Deep Inside" also was awarded, "Album of the Year" and two harmonica awards. He has created a following at Czar's of those that enjoy truely entertaining music that isn't what you hear from the norm; a singer with the deep soul of Motown, a harmonica player who can graft Sonny Boy II and Little Walter with Sugar Blue, a songwriter who tells his own compelling stories in an unhurried, J.J. Cale-like manner, and a musical visionary who is unafraid to mix the didgeridoo, an important part of his Australian indigenous culture, with infectious modern percussive rhythms, and you have a glimpse of what Harper is about.

Leigh Kakaty (Vocals/Guitars), Dave Gracia (Guitars), Jamie Nummer (Bass/Vox), and Dylan Allison (Drums/Vox) came together to create a unique blend of heavy guitars and infectious grooves to help signature Pop Evil's melodic sound. With an uncanny ability to arrange, produce, and write catchy hooks Pop Evil has quickly caught the attention of both fans and the music industry.
Pop Evil is currently in the studio with accomplished producer Al Sutton (Kid Rock) from Rustbelt Studios in Royal Oak, Michigan working on their new album. With the release of their first single off the album, "Somebody Like You," the band has quickly become a crowd favorite in the Midwest. The band recently shot their music video for the song in Los Angeles and plan on releasing it in the Summer of 2006.
Already having performed at the 2006 Warped Tour and sharing the stage with such multi-platinum recording artists such as Boston, Puddle of Mudd, Trapt and Shinedown, Pop Evil is preparing to be the breakthrough band of the future! We look forward to their Czar's debut!

The Raindogs
with
Headless Felt
and
Few Of The Many
There will be three bands playing this Saturday night! The first will be "The Headless Felts", the Second "Few of the Many", "The Rain Dogs" will be the headliner.
The Rain Dogs are a completely original band that sounds uniquely unlike any other. Although this fiery foursome has the standard drum, bass, and two guitars of other rock bands, the execution of their songs is anything but standard. Although there are elements in their music that reflect various influences, The Rain Dogs' music definitely takes alternative rock to a new and creative direction. The Rain Dogs' songs are written from emotions that create infectious and addictive grooves, which flirt with hints of early punk, 60's rock, modern pop, and a subtle touch of Goth. Making the sound difficult to describe, but not difficult to remember. Each song takes on it's own life, differing from each other, with a combination of two to three part harmonies, high energy and extreme dynamics; driven by an intense lead vocal. A night with the Rain Dogs will run the emotional gamut from sweaty jams, to concise tunes, and will appeal to an audience who likes original heart-felt rock & roll.
Combining hoedown rhythms with blues-driven solos, Rootstand is a uniquely refreshing alternative to the whiney faux-punk and butt rock bands heard all to often on the radio these days. Though it is primarily traditional acoustic roots music, the band's sound also ranges from reggae beats to celtic rhythms, bringing an eclectic and interesting medley of styles to the stage.

Ted Atkatz's decision to leave his gig as the principal percussionist in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra was a bold one. Exchanging his drumsticks for a Nord keyboard and a Gibson acoustic, he began singing an altogether different tune. He wrote twelve songs, collaborated with three of Chicago's finest musicians, and NYCO was born.
Two, NYCO's debut album, resonates with the sincerity and energy of great rock'n roll, capped by Atkatz's striking melodies. Produced by Grammy-award winner Jim Tullio, reviewers have called the album a "must-own." Chicago's own Q101 FM and WXRT 93.1 FM, stations that helped bring bands like Wilco and Smashing Pumpkins into the mainstream, have lately taken to spinning NYCO's tunes. The soulful "English Song" has already garnered significant attention, and has even been dubbed a "pop classic" by WXRT DJ Richard Milne.
Onstage, Atkatz is joined by Dave DelCiello, Dave Bowers and Devin Staples. For anyone who has experienced the band live, they make it easy to understand that they were meant to rock out together.
Formed on New Year's Eve '99, in the wake of Y2k, the band jammed and hasn't stopped. Since then the band has grown and created a sound like no other. From rock to funk, reggae to blues, Gaia's Ghost is one of the best rockin-blues trippin-funk bands around.
A five pc. from East Lansing, Funk-Rock band Egon has been playing together for about two years. The band--Jesse Jason (keyboard, synth, vocals), Justin DeLapa (guitar, vocals), Spencer Shattuck (bass, vocals), Kyle Sullivan (guitar), and Kyle Avery (drums, vocals). Groovin' rhythms, energetic guitar and keyboard/synth leads, and in-your-face vocals describe this exciting young band. Whether you classify them as Funk, Rock, Jamrock, Prog rock, or any genre you like, these five will be sure to deliver an electrifying performance where you won't help but bounce with them to the groove.
Influenced by Led Zeppelin, Steely Dan, Jamiroquai, Umphreys McGee, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and so many more..."Straight up mean funky-grooviness" will surely be showcased at any Egon performance--come see Egon at Czars May 10!

AKASHA
Akasha is a fusion of deep groove reggae, blistery blues rock, and hip hop flavors with pure melodies and rich vocal harmonies. Stylistically, Akasha's base elements are never forced but always flow seamlessly from one song to the next. Akasha's diverse approach gives birth to an unmistakable variety of heavy, raw grooves reminiscent of Bob Marley and the Wailers, Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters, and the Roots.
Akasha unifies their diversity of styles through the lush vocal work of Cosmos Ray. His performances are riveting and personal, as though he is speaking directly to you. The quartet is anchored by Doug Bistrow's thumping upright bass and Mikey August's solid drum work. Scott Moss' dynamic electric guitar combines with them to create a thick and colorful tapestry of rhythm and sound.

Dance and Rock Music You Love
Think back a year or two. Heck, think back several years. Think back to highschool. Ye-e-a-a-h, youknow what I’m talkin’ about. Remember the Junior year turn-about dance? Remember the the-e-eme? Oh, it had a theme. It also had an elected court and a song. Maybe it was that Crash Test Dummies song, Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm. Or maybe your committie chair person rigged the vote back in 1968 for The Monkeys’, Daydream Believer. Two songs from two totally different decades, both smash hits no one will ever forget. At least that’s what we’re banking on here at GENERATIONS, Inc. We take great pride (and joy) in bringing you the music you love no matter what decade you hail from. Whether you’re brand new to the club scene or been around the block a couple times since highschool, GENERATIONS has what you are looking for in an evening of entertainment.
The Chicago-bred trio’s organic, hard-driving synthesis of gutsy hard rock, gritty Delta blues, soulful backwoods boogie and down-home psychedelia has taken its hometown by storm. The frenzied power of the band's live shows has won them a fiercely loyal fan base, and their last CD Dharmakaya (produced by Sean Slade & Paul Kolderie – Radiohead, Uncle Tupelo, Hole, Warren Zevon) received substantial airplay across the Midwest, including Chicago's influential WXRT.
Czar's Own Birthday Bash!!
We're Turning 15 years old!!!
Happy birthday to me, Happy birthday to me. Tonight were celebrating Czar's 15th year as St. Joe's premier LIVE MUSIC club. Come down as we celebrate 15 great years with $1.00 Miller Lite Drafts and $2.00 well drinks plus other great specials. Tonight we have a great band out of the Chicago land area, that opened up the Midwest BEAT bash in April.7X7 can be best describe as all over the board. From the Foo Fighters to Counting Crows to The Rolling Stones to Pearl Jam. They also do some of their own great tunes. Having competed in THE REGION RUMBLE in Merriville the last few years, this is a band you wont want to miss!!!.
56 Hope Road is a band bonded like a family, and as a result, their music has an unmistakable honesty and openness. Uncanny, intuitive communication creates an easy interplay on stage, making even the most densely layered tunes sound effortless. They allow the joy of spontaneous creativity to color their song-based arrangements - neither losing their musical center, nor restricting its growth. The music is acoustic funk at its finest with sounds reminiscent of G-Love and Special Sauce, Richie Havens, MMW, Grateful Dead, Paul Simon and Gomez. This seven piece “acoustic funk explosion” is known for clever songwriting, lush vocal harmonies and one of the tightest rhythm sections on the scene made up of co-lead singer songwriters Dave Hamilton and Steve Goveia, drummer Greg Fundis, upright bassist Chad Sanders, vocalist Anne Katzfey, percussionist Matt Katzfey, and electric guitarist Chris Corsale.
A phone call roused Dan Deitrich from his afternoon nap. It was the promoter for a local venue. They were bringing in a nation act known as The Elms and needed an opening band. Mistaking Dan as the singer of an existing band, The Voice asked him if his group would like the spot. He quickly accepted and began making calls of his own. In a matter of minutes he had recruited long-time friend and drummer Jeff Mierau, a second guitarist and a bass player. Johnny’s Little Rocketship was born.
Since that shaky first performance, Johnny’s Little Rocketship has become a force to be reckoned with. Skye Thrasher and Zach Swisher have since taken over the roles of rhythm guitar and bass, respectively. With an all but nonexistent local music scene JLR was forced to put on the majority of their shows wherever they could. The venues included cornfields, driveways, churches, schools, and sweet 16 birthday parties as well as frequenting the few local clubs such as Czar’s 505.
THIS MAY BE THE BEST COVER BAND EVER TO TAKE CZAR'S STAGE!!!! COME ON OUT AND SUPPORTS CZAR'S NEW POLICY TO GREAT ROCK N ROLL BANDS EVERY SATURDAY NIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Monkey Cocktail was formed in November of 1996. The band, which is based out of Valparaiso, Indiana, was originally known as Dying Breed. Founded by lead singer/guitar player Jack Adams, Jack formed the band around a rhythm section which consisted of his old friend and bass player, Shawn Michael Farrell and new friend and drummer, Bobby Shaw. Jack decided that he wanted to raise the ante. Adams had grown up listening to bands like KISS and Aerosmith, bands that brought a certain spectacle to the stage. Adams was tired of seeing bands in blue jeans, flannel shirts and work boots performing on stage. As he put it "they look like they just came from their day gig". Jack felt that bands owed something more to the people paying the cover charge.
Taking the Chicago land market by storm since forming in 1997, this powerful quintet of hard rockin' music veterans were voted as the "Top New Band of 1997" by the readership of Midwest BEAT magazine, the South Side's premier local entertainment publication. The group has also been the celebrated subject of recent color cover features in the entertainment sections of The Gary Post-Tribune and The Times, the two largest daily newspapers of Northwest Indiana.
So just why is this band so special and such a big deal in a region chock full of local musical groups? Maybe it is because of the stellar musicianship housed within its framework - drawing from a proud history that includes past associations with Sgt. Roxx, Survivor, Joker, Steele and Trick Or Treat. Perhaps it is because of the infectious good time feeling that captivates the population of every place they plug in and play? Maybe it is the powerful original music they compose? Maybe it is the outrageous showmanship and attitude they bring to the stage with them at every performance? Most likely, it is a combination of all of this that has weaved a magical spell over all who have rocked with them.
An animated and colorful front man, Jack Adams, quickly became a local legend while the vocalist for Sgt. Roxx, a national touring band which never failed to sell out Midwest night clubs during the early- '90s. Adams was voted as the "Favorite Chicago land Vocalist/Front man '97'" by Midwest BEAT Magazine readers. Shawn Farrell anchored the low end in a pair of slick touring acts - Steele and Trick Or Treat - that wound up as full color pin-up boys in several national rock magazines. David Carl, spent most of the early '90s under the creative wing of Survivor mastermind Jim Peterik, with whom he composed and recorded a best-selling independent release. Carl also filled in as an alternate member of the platinum-selling Survivor when the group's founding guitarist Frankie Sullivan was out with an injury. Miroballi was a songwriter and guitarist with Joker, an international recording act who were featured on the soundtracks for the late '80s Paramount films, "Demonic Toys", "Trancers III", and the cult-classic "Bad Channels". Shaw, a relative newcomer to the big leagues, spent many years honing his craft in notable N.W. Indiana club bands.

Hugh DeNeal, their chief lyricist, uses his poetic talents to craft twisted tales of a dark, yet often humorous nature. The Woodbox Gang specializes in "story telling" songs. The group has shared the stage with artists such as Hank Williams III, the John Cowan Band, & many others. Alternative country icon Jason Ringenberg (Jason and the Scorchers) has been quoted in several interviews citing the Woodbox Gang as one of his favorite new bands.
"Everybody knows that the Sauce is HOT LIKE FIRE!!!" That's what people throughout the U.S. are saying about Detroit-based HotSauce. Influenced by great artists such as Earth Wind & Fire, Prince, and Mint Condition, HotSauce is taking music to new levels. Each member of the dynamic eight-piece band adds their own unique flavor to the musical potluck. "We're all formally trained, play multiple instruments, write, and sing. Our talent & diversity helps us to keep developing fresh material," shares trombonist Big O.
Formed in 2000, HotSauce was among the rising stars of the Detroit jazz scene- working with acclaimed jazz musicians such as Marcus Belgrave and Rodney Whitaker- before embracing a more mainstream focus. Keyboardist Eric says, "We still love jazz: it's fun and keeps us on top of our game. But when we thought about the kind of music we want to do and the people we want to reach, we knew we had to do our own thing." Turning to additional influences from various genres (R&B, Rock, Gospel, Soul, Hip Hop, & Funk to name a few), the band developed a unique style to satisfy any musical appetite.
With a buzz compared to the Jackson Five and N'Sync phenomena, HotSauce is developing a strong following as one of the hottest bands in the Midwest. They have performed all over the country, including the North American International Auto Show, the Ford Detroit International Jazz Festival, various colleges & universities, and numerous national, regional, and local television & radio appearances. Their energetic stage show has people everywhere talking about Detroit's new flavor. "It's deeper than just great music: It's an experience!"
HotSauce is ready to impact the music industry. Recognizing a need for quality music and "complete" artists in the industry, the band has created a unique experience unlike anything offered today. To experience HotSauce is to experience real good, feel good music, contagious energy, and a dynamic live show that will change your life.
"Today, most music seems to be either negative or all about sex. It feels like no one is releasing anything that people will want to listen to 15, 10, or even 5 years from now. What happened to good music? HotSauce is all about music that promotes the 'Elements of L.I.F.E.' - Love, Inspiration, Freedom, and Entertainment. We focus on making 'timeless' music: great songs that people will play for years to come. When you experience HotSauce, you'll never be the same."

"The Michigan City Vandal’s strong lyrics and powerful music inspire, but the music rocks so hard you'll be too busy jumping up and down and screaming along to over analyze them. Few artist surprise and excite you from the first listen...it's not about shock value, they are just that awesome." Village Voice Media-L.A. Weekly June 2006.
"The Michigan City Vandals leave an imprint like a combat boot to the head. Few women singers have the balls to be categorized with My Chemical Romance and The White Stripes, but lead singer Miss Fortune, as one fan put it, "is like watching Aeon Flux front Korn". She is aggressive without compromising her femininity, with a powerful stage presence and infectious sexuality. Gloriously fierce and sonically potent, don’t miss The Michigan City Vandals" MTV Online 02/05.
Recently dubbed by Musiczine as the leaders of the post-ironic music movement, the Michigan City Vandals are currently finishing their new album “Our own little slice of Hell.” The band plans to let use 100% of the record sales to build a Habitat for Humanity house in Benton Harbor, MI.

They are continually active in cultivating a culture for a growing number of fans.

PRETZEL LOGIC plays a diverse spectrum of artists from the 60's,70's and 80's. Everything from Frank Zappa, Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder to Led Zeppelin, The Beatles and AC/DC. One hit wonders, TV theme songs and even a little country. And LOTS of Steely Dan ( where the name PRETZEL LOGIC originates ). PRETZEL LOGIC does it all! The members are all seasoned pros and were hand picked for their musicianship. The band likes to have fun and doesn't take itself too seriously, but prides itself on delivering great music and a good time.
I know what you're thinking, "Christian Pop/Rock music - BORING!" Think Again.

PINK FREUD is THE BEST PINK FLOYD TRIBUTE you'll ever hear, featuring four of the best rock musicians in the country. When you close your eyes, you will swear you are sitting in the best seats in the house, listening to Pink Floyd rock the way you remember them. When you open your eyes, you'll keep asking yourself the question "HOW THE HELL ARE THEY DOING THIS WITH JUST FOUR GUYS??" While other bands have gone the easy route and relied upon smoke and mirrors to "capture Pink Floyd", the truth is, they have neglected the most important aspects: the sound, the musicianship, and the soul of the music. But don't take our word for it, check out what these folks had to say....then come hear it for yourself!!!!!
